I’ve been absolutely enthralled with Fran Lebowitz’s Metropolitan Life. I have a penchant for Lebowitz’s wit and captivating use of vocabulary. I began listening to every interview I could get my hands on to occupy my many drives home from school. I found myself shocked at the completely dry humor in such an abrupt manner. She may as well just speak what everyone is thinking but is hesitant to say.
Needless to say, I needed to read her books to continue this entertainment that cannot be found through mindless TikTok trends that previously occupied my attention. If I am holding Metropolitan Life, you’ll inevitably hear audible bursts of laughter from a room (or two) away. My roommates can, and will attest to this. It's a tough book to get your hands on, but on the off chance you stumble upon it, it's a non-negotiable that you make sure you are the next owner.
Five of my favorite one-liners of hers will undoubtedly urge you to enjoy her very relatable, sardonic commentary.
“People with no sense of humor are not only dull but also extremely dangerous.”
“There must be a mirror famine in New York.”
“I never took hallucinogenic drugs because I never wanted my consciousness to expand one unnecessary iota.”
“No one in the subway system has any spirit left. They’ve beaten it out of us. It would take one subway ride for the Dalai Lama to turn into a lunatic.”
“My favorite way to wake up is to have a certain French movie star whisper to me softly at two-thirty in the afternoon that if I want to get to Sweden in time to pick up my Nobel Prize for Literature I had better ring for breakfast. This occurs rather less often than one might wish.”
